One advantage to not having a 'bucket list' is that you can go anywhere, anytime. Much in the way we ended up going to Ecuador in 2024, we decided to go to Portugal. It was an interesting destination fit into the time we had to travel. It was our third experience with G Adventures. This was a new tour for the company, and as such there were a few hiccups along the way. We started the tour in Lisbon meeting our guide Megane and the rest of the group. The traveled to the spainish border exploring the Beira region. This was followed by a brief stop in the mountains of Serra da Estrela before heading to the Duouro Valley. This was followed by our final stop in Porto. We had been warned that Portugal was hilly, but we were not in the best physical shape for the average of 58 flights of stair per day during our adventure. As has been the case with my other trips to Europe, I was struck by the different scale of the history. Standing on castle walls from the 1100s over looking a timeless valley is a humbling experience. The compensation of our physical efforts were the meals and wines we enjoyed along the way. My only regret is that we did not have more time to explore Porto. We did however get to visit with a small family owned port winery and expand our horizons on the world of port.
