Having started our scuba certification process earlier this year, we wanted to move forward and get our Advanced Open Water Certification. Having had such a positive experience with our instructor in Key Largo we decided to return for our required dives.
Unfortunately a tropical storm that make landfall the day after we arrived put a serious wrench in the works. While our overall experince was not the best. We did come close to finishing all our requirements. I also developed an appreciation for the on-line course work we had to complete before our dive.
We went on a couple of dives with another company in the area. As soon as I trip to submerge I knew I was in trouble. The visibility near the surface was extremely poor. Just good enough for me to watch our guide for the dive disappear into the depths, never to be seen for the rest of the dive.
This was shortly followed by pretty intense vertigo. Even through this I was able to remember the lesson about what to do in this situation and keep my breathing under control and work through the dizziness to complete the dive.
