After completing our first COVID vaccinations, we were feeling slightly more comfortable with the idea of traveling again. After our Introduction to Scuba course in the Bahamas two years prior, we were excited about getting our open water certification. After completing the on line portion of the course, I felt pretty comfortable saying I'm glad we did not die during our intro since the educational component was all of an hour. Not ready for international travel at this stage, we decided to go to Key Largo for the dive portion of the certification. A true fact about Key Largo is that there are more dive shops than fast food restaurants on the island. So picking one for the certification was a challenge. After an exhaustive search we opted for Blue Water Divers....in retrospect this decision probably saved the trip. While Key Largo has a large number of reef options, they all involve a modest boat ride. Also since the reefs are relatively shallow, the water can be very choppy. As we approached the first dive site we were experiencing 3-5 ft swells. Lindsay with her propensity towards motion sickness was suffering from the trip, then paniced trying to gather the group before decending. She ended up getting back into the boat and missed out on the first two dive. Both the Captain and our instructor were so reassuring that she agreed to give it a try the next morning when the weather was more favorable. We were both able to pass our certification, which so easily could have gone the other way. Afterwards we made our way down the Keys to Key West. All in all a wonderful vacation, and a needed break at a not so wonderful time in history.
