Wedding and Honeymoon
October - November 2020
While I don't generally thing of myself delaying once a decision had been made in my mind, external events conspired for us to delay getting married for two years after we were engaged. What we could never has anticipated was how the world would change around us due to COVID-19. The date was easy, October 28, 2020 would be our five year anniversary of being together. The problem was how and where. Plan after plan was quashed. The begining of a solution started when we learned that there are four states that do not require an officiant for a marriage: Colorado, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and California. The second was an wedding photographer who specialized in 'adventure elopements'. The final result is having a ceremony at the edge of an apline lake (Lower Mowhawk Lake) just outside of Breckenridge Colorado. We knew it was a gamble hoping to have a wedding in late October at 12,000ft. The next compromise was that our original intent was to leave after the reception for a safari honeymoon on the African savanah. Sadly this was also a COVID casuality. Earlier this year we purchased a teardrop camper and enjoyed a social distancing vacation exploring the waterfalls of the Upper Pensinula of Michigan. Our plan was to take a leasurely trip from Michigan to Colorado, perhaps spending the day in the Badlands and seeing Mount Rushmore. It started off reasonably well with us sleeping in a truck stop in Wisconsin our first night. As we crossed the state line into South Dakota the weather started to turn. We had a fun but chilly stop at Souix Falls, but shortly thereafter ran into a winter storm that seriously slowed our progress and nixed our visit to the Badlands. Our last night spend in the South East corner of Wyoming we work of to below zero temperatures and a foot of new snow. As the crossed the state line into Colorado, the heavens smiled upon us and the weather cleared. After a quick stop in Denver to pick up our marriage certificate we headed up to Breckenridge. One reason of our choice of Colorado is that Lindsay's sister (Andrea) and her husband (Carlton) live in Denver and our oldest daughter (Emily) flew in for the event to serve as our event crew and witnesses. On our day, we met our photographer at the base of the mountain at sunrise to start a 3 mile and 2000ft elevation gain hike to Lower Mowhawk Lake. While we were hiking with spikes on our boots though a modest covering of snow, the day was otherwise perfect - windfree and upper 30's. I know I am biased, but in contrast to most wedding pictures, I enjoy revisiting our wedding shots and sharing them with others. While this was far from what we had originally imagined it was exactly what we wanted. After a well deserved nap once we hiked back to the back of mountain, we celebrated in Breckenridge. That to our initial stop at the Breckenridge Distillary I don't remember much of going out to eat. The next day we hitched up our trailer, Luna, and headed out to visit as many national parks as we could squeeze in over the next 10 days. I think we did a pretty impressive job logging visits to: Black Canyon Colorado Monument Arches Dead Horse Point CanyonLands Grand Canyon Bryce Canyon All with sunny and warm conditions and largely empty. So while this particular adventure was not what I expected, it was truly magical!
